Steven Crowther and Adam Moon will have Lewis Hamilton quaking in his boots after the pair blitzed their rivals on the opening night of Leyland’s thrilling Karting Championship in Gateshead.
The dynamic duo edged out six other finalists in a pulsating 10-lap final at the F1 Karting arena to secure coveted spots at the grand final in Birmingham on September 12.
The first ever heat of the Leyland Karting Championship got off to an action-packed start as the north east’s most daring tradespeople donned their overalls and helmets to take part in the initial 15 heats.
And with the drivers reaching speeds of up to 40mph across the 450-metre long track there were plenty of thrills and spills along the way.
Sunderland electrician and painter Adam marked himself out as an early frontrunner for one of the final spots by winning three of his four heats. Reports that he was given private lessons by Michael Schumacher in the build up are yet to be confirmed!
The high-octane pace during the heats was relentless but it stepped up another gear during the final as a partisan crowd roared the eight finalists on.
Steven went out in front after recording the fastest average times over his heats and didn’t relinquish his lead throughout the race, despite coming under increasing pressure from Adam and Ali Whyte, who just missed out on a spot in the national final after finishing third.
The pair were presented with their medals and champagne by Leyland Lovely Tina, who set pulses racing throughout the evening by posing for photographs and handing out Leyland goodie bags brimming with exclusive prizes.
Steven, who runs Crowther’s Kitchens Bathrooms and Bedrooms, was alerted to the competition after seeing the competition whilst visiting his local Leyland Stockist and was so determined to compete that he made the trip up all the way from his native Halifax!
“I’ve had a fantastic evening and would like to thank Leyland for putting on such a great event,” he said. “I just can’t wait to pit my driving skills against the rest of the country in the national final now!”
Fourteen other tradespeople with a taste for adrenaline will come through gruelling heats in Chester, Glasgow, Nottingham, Streatham, Letchworth, Bristol and Newry over the coming months to compete against Steven and Adam at what is already being billed as the ‘Battle of Birmingham’.
There, they will not only be able to stake their claim as the UK’s speediest tradesperson but will walk away with a whole host of top prizes. Along with scooping the Championship trophy, the Champion will also win an amazing prize package of a behind the scenes full hospitality package for two with Leyland Paints sponsored team, Airwaves BMW, at the final race of the British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch. Two nights accommodation for two at a four star hotel is also included along with £250 spending money and an exclusive BTCC & Leyland goodie bag. All the runners up at the national final will get their hands on a driving day experience voucher, along with a host of other prizes.
