ProductQuestionAnswer
Leyland Vinyl Matt / Vinyl Silk / Soft sheenThe emulsion I have just applied has dried streaky and patchy, why? This is usually caused when the paint hasn't been applied in a uniform/even manner or it hasn't been thoroughly stirred before use. The nature and porosity of the surface that has been painted will also have a bearing upon the finish achieved. Surface contamination such as grease and dirt could also be a problem.
Leyland Vinyl Matt / Vinyl Silk / Soft sheenThe emulsion paint I applied to my previously painted kitchen walls is now peeling off, why?It is likely that the surface was contaminated. Before painting it is important to prepare, ensuring that the surfaces are clean, dry and free from contaminants such as grease. Applying the emulsion onto a hard glossy surface or an oil based finish which has not been abraded to provide the necessary key could also be the problem.
Leyland Acrylic EggshellMy customer wants their bathroom walls painting, what is the best product to use on them?Acrylic Eggshell is ideal for this application. It is very durable and washable and does not promote the growth of mould. It's also easy to apply and has all the quick drying and low odour benefits of an emulsion paint.
Leyland Vinyl MattMy customer has been washing very stubborn dirty marks off walls that were recently painted with Vinyl Matt and says the patches now look shiny what has happened? This is not unusual with matt emulsion paints especially when very dirty and stubborn stains are being removed. The vigorous rubbing action has resulted in some of the surface paint being removed and the surface has become burnished and polished. Matt is fine in most instances but in very high traffic areas Soft Sheen, Silk or even Acrylic Eggshell could be used.
Leyland Vinyl MattA white deposit similar to crystals has appeared on my new plaster walls, what do I do?This is known as efflorescence which are white salt deposits that are brought to the surface by moisture. The appearance of the deposits would suggest that the plaster is not dry yet. The deposits can be dry brushed away with a nylon or bristle brush and the surface checked periodically until they stop. Leyland Contract Matt and Super Leytex High Opacity Contract Matt can be used on new plaster.
Leyland Vinyl Matt / Vinyl Silk / Soft sheenWe have been working on a new build project and had to touch up wall areas that have been damaged by other trades, but you can see where we have been, what can we do?Touching up is a practice that is very difficult to achieve successfully. There are various factors that can affect the finish. Firstly using different batches of paint in the same colour will pose a problem. Using a brush to touch areas that have been rolled results in different textures and film thicknesses which are then highlighted in the light. In many instances if touching up has failed the area will need to be painted again. The deeper the colour and higher the sheen level of the paint used the less successful the outcome.
Leyland Super Leytex High Opacity Matt or Contract MattWhich paint is best to apply to new plaster?Because new plaster is still drying it is best to use a permeable or breathable coating such as a Contract Matt or Super Leytex High Opacity Matt which are specially formulated to allow the moisture still in the plaster to escape without disrupting the paint film. If a more solid coating is used on new plaster then as the plaster dries out it could form blisters.
Leyland Vinyl SilkI've applied two coats as recommended but can still can see the colour beneath what can I do?Two coats are usually sufficient when painting previously painted surfaces, however additional coats may be required when painting contrasting colours. If painting over contrasting colours with Vinyl Silk apply a coat of Vinyl Matt in a similar shade to the one your 're finishing in this will help to improve the hiding power of the paint.
Leyland Vinyl MattI'm painting new plaster and I seem to have used a lot of paint on the first coat why is that?
The new plaster will be very absorbent and will suck the paint into the surface. Thinning the first coat with 10 % clean water will help but the second coat will go much further.
Leyland Contract Matt & Super Leytex High Opacity Matt EmulsionA white deposit similar to crystals has appeared on my new plaster walls, what do I do?This deposit is known as "efflorescence" and is related to moisture in in the walls that is drying out. This reaction can occur on both new and existing surfaces. Until the walls are totally dry the deposits should be dry brushed away and the surface checked periodically. Leyland Contract Matt or Super Leytex High Opacity Matt are best applied.
Leyland Vinyl MattWhy have I not achieved the coverage rate quoted on the tin?Coverage is usually measured as a theoretical average of the paint being applied to both painted/unpainted surfaces. The covering or spread rate of paint coatings will be determined by the condition, porosity or profile of the surface they are applied to. Most surfaces to which paints are applied to are naturally absorbent. During application by whatever method there is a possibility that the paint could be applied too generously therefore reducing the spreading rate.
Leyland Vinyl Matt, Silk, Soft Sheen and Super Leytex High Opacity Matt EmulsionI've been told to seal my new plaster walls before painting, what should I use?As long as the plaster is dry we would recommend thinning down the first coat of emulsion that is being used with clean water, approximately 10%.This will help the first coat of paint go on easier and will quench the porosity  of the new plaster. Do not seal the walls with anything else this could make application of the paint harder.
Leyland Acrylic EggshellI have got a school to paint, what finish is best for the walls in the corridors? The finish will have to be tough, durable and washable as this is a high traffic area. Leyland Acrylic Eggshell is ideal for this situation as it has all the necessary properties and is also low odour and quick drying. If the walls have been painted in a solvent based Gloss or Eggshell the surfaces must be clean and rubbed down well to promote the adhesion.
Trade - Floor Paint
ProductQuestionAnswer
Leyland Heavy Duty Floor PaintI have never applied floor paint how do I apply this product easily? The paint can be applied exactly as if emulsion paint was being used on a wall. Cut in the edges with a brush and apply the rest with a roller. Using the roller on an extension pole makes the job a lot easier. Work in equal sections each time to keep an open edge. The rougher or more textured the floor is the heavier the pile of roller needed.
Leyland Heavy Duty Floor PaintWhy has the floor paint stuck to my car tyres? In most instances this is due to a lack of adhesion between the floor and paint coating. Surface contaminates such as dirt and grease are usually to blame. Applying a very thick coating in one application can also cause problems as the paint will take longer to cure. Re-introducing the vehicle to the painted floor before the paint has had time to fully cure can also cause this problem.
Leyland Heavy Duty Floor PaintHow long should I wait before painting a new concrete floor? As a guide allow a drying period of a month for every inch of concrete laid in depth. Conditions in the building will also affect the drying period. Application of the paint to the floor before it is fully dry will result in a premature breakdown.
Leyland Heavy Duty Floor PaintI need to paint a metal floor area can I use this paint?Yes it is ideal for metal surfaces. The metal should be primed first using All Purpose Primer.
Trade - Primers & Undercoat
ProductQuestionAnswer
Leyland Wood PrimerCan I leave primed timber exposed externally for long periods of time. This is not a good practice as the primer does not provide a surface that is resistant to weathering and the elements. Primed surfaces that have been exposed may need to be prepared and re-primed. Generally the finishing coats need to be applied as soon as possible. Preferably within 7 days.
Leyland Alkali Resisting Wall PrimerI've got to gloss paint some stone window sills externally what primer do I need?
Alkali Resisting Wall Primer is the right product. It helps seal powdery surfaces and resist Alkali attack. Leyland Undercoat and Gloss can then be applied.
Leyland Alkali Resisting Wall PrimerHow do I treat nicotine stained surfaces? The surfaces need to be washed down to remove as much surface contamination as possible. Apply the Alkali Resisting Wall Primer to any stained areas. Emulsion paints or Acrylic Eggshell can be used as the finish.
Leyland Acrylic Primer UndercoatI'm painting lots of bare timber architraves and skirting in a new office block can I use Acrylic Primer Undercoat before the Gloss finish?
Acrylic Primer Undercoat can be used both as a primer and full undercoat. Any of the Leyland finishes can be applied over the product even solvent based gloss.
Leyland Wood PrimerWhy do I need to prime bare timber?Priming bare timber is essential for the success of the whole paint system. The primer soaks into the timber creating a good bond and quenches the absorbency. This provides a sound base for the next coating.
All Purpose PrimerWhat primer can I use on different surfaces? All Purpose Primer can be used on a variety of correctly prepared surfaces such as wood, metal and plaster. Its ideal to have in the van for those unexpected situations and everyday use.

ProductQuestionAnswer
Leyland Non Drip & One Coat GlossCan I use these products externally to paint my window frames?Yes both products can be used externally and will offer good protection and durability. Prepare the surfaces as normal and apply as per the instructions.
Leyland High GlossI'm using a very deep colour of gloss and it has not covered the undercoat fully, why? It's highly likely that this colour of gloss needs additional coats to achieve full opacity. This is not unusual with very deep shades of gloss. Many colours that require additional coats are shown on the colour card. Additional coats will also give added protection.
Leyland High GlossCan I apply the gloss directly onto plastic rainwater goods that have faded or do I need an undercoat? After cleaning the rainwater goods thoroughly apply the gloss onto the surface. No undercoat is required unless the surfaces were previously painted. More than one gloss coat will be required to achieve full opacity.
Leyland High GlossWhy has my internal woodwork painted with solvent based brilliant white gloss turned "yellow" over a period of time?General discolouration occurs with all solvent based paints over a period of time, but is particularly noticeable when brilliant white has been used. Yellowing is speeded up when the painted surfaces are excluded from natural daylight. Nicotine and oil burning appliances will also discolour the paint. Acrylic Gloss will remain whiter for longer in such conditions.
Leyland High GlossWhy has the gloss paint on the outside of my property dried flat? The loss of gloss on external paint coatings is usually due to exposure to damp or cold conditions while drying. A whitening affect known as "blooming" can also develop. Care should be taken when painting externally during Autumn and Winter months. The surfaces can be rubbed down and recoated in better conditions.
Leyland High Gloss, One Coat Gloss and Non Drip GlossI can not get rid of the smell after using Gloss paint what can I do?Providing good ventilation is essential. Ensure the doors and windows are open to improve the airflow during and after application. Removing soft furnishings before painting is a good idea as the odour can cling to them.
Leyland Acrylic GlossI've never used water based gloss paints do I apply them in the same manner as a liquid Gloss?Generally yes. For best results with this product always use a good quality synthetic brush to apply the paint. Apply the paint generously taking care not to overspread it. Work quickly to prevent the wet edge drying off.
Leyland Acrylic GlossMy customer doesn't like the smell from solvent based paints what can I use to paint the trim in their house?Acrylic Gloss is low odour and very quick drying. It is also very tough and hard wearing. It would be ideal in this situation.
Leyland Acrylic GlossI've applied the paint over existing solvent based paint that was in good condition but the paint chips off when knocked, why is the happening? When using this type of paint it is essential the surface to be painted is clean and dry. However rubbing down to provide a key is just as important especially when painting over old gloss finishes. Failure to carryout any of these two simple processes will result in a lack of adhesion making the coatings much more susceptible to impact.
Leyland High GlossWhat has caused runs to appear on my gloss painted surfaces? This has  been caused by uneven application or applying further paint where the coating has started to set creating thick joints. Applying the paint too generously and then not spreading it out evenly across the surface will cause curtaining and sagging. Once the paint is sufficiently dry and hardened rub down and paint again.

ProductQuestionAnswer
Truguard Masonry FinishesWhy have I not achieved the coverage rate quoted on the tins?
Coverage is usually measured as a theoretical average of the paint being applied to both painted/unpainted and various masonry surfaces. The covering or spread rate of paint coatings will be determined by the condition, porosity or profile of the surface they are applied to. Most surfaces paints are applied to are naturally absorbent. You should quench this absorbency with good quality primers or sealers before applying finishing materials. Unsealed surfaces will absorb more material which will reduce the spread rate. The profile of the surface will also effect the spread rate of the paint e.g. masonry surfaces with a raised profile can increase the surface area by 30%.
Truguard Masonry FinishesWhich or what sealer do I need for my unpainted concrete walls?
If they are clean and dry and in a sound condition a first coat of slightly thinned masonry paint would do. If the surface is friable and dusty then treat with a stabilising solution.
Truguard Masonry FinishesDo I need to use a stabilising solution before applying masonry paint?
Not if the paint is going on to a sound clean surface but if there is a possibility the surface is extremely porous or chalky then a stabiliser is essential. Stabilising solution is a highly penetrative material designed to bind friable or chalky surfaces and quench highly absorbent surfaces to provide a suitable bound and sealed surface for any water based masonry coating. To ensure there is good adhesion of the masonry coating the surface must be non-glossy. The stabilising solution should be applied to a small test area and if it dries to a glossy finish then it should be thinned with one part white spirit to two parts stabilising solution. Products should always be used in accordance with application instructions and precautions on the product data sheet.
Truguard Masonry FinishesThe Masonry paint I applied this morning has washed off in the first rain shower after I finished, why?
This is a water based material and if the paint film hasn't had time to fully cure before the rain shower, the rain would soften & thin the coating causing it to wash away. Water based coatings dry mainly by evaporation of the water content. Cold, humid conditions & low temperatures (10 deg C & below) can prevent the paint from drying so it shouldn't be applied during these conditions or just before they are expected. If there is any doubt about the conditions at the time of application use Truguard Pliolite Masonry finish which is rain resistant within 20 minutes.
Truguard Masonry FinishesWhat would cause masonry paint to flake off?
There are many reasons why this would happen. Firstly the surface under the paint may not have been prepared properly and could be contaminated with dirt, mould, lichen etc or it was in a poor unstable condition and should have been stabilised. Moisture is a key factor too this may have been within the underlying substrate at the time of application or has entered during the period of exposure due to defects in the surface or leaking pipes and gutters etc. In certain instances when heavy layers of existing paint coatings are present, a week bond can form and the added weight and stress of the new coating can cause a breakdown. Always check the surfaces carefully before painting.
Truguard Masonry FinishesHow can I avoid a batch to batch colour variation when using more than one can?
For best results select from the same batch whenever possible. It is important when using more than one batch to intermix the paint to avoid colour variations. If intermixing cans is not practical try to find a natural break in the work.
Truguard Flexible Exterior Gloss SystemWhat are the benefits of using this product on exterior woodwork instead of traditional paints?
This type of product is manufactured using Flexible Alkyd Resins. The dry paint film is highly flexible and much more resistant to cracking and blistering as timber moves and/or becomes damp. This product has been independently tested to give a life expectancy in excess of five years.
Truguard Flexible Exterior Gloss SystemCan this product be used on previously painted surfaces?Yes- it offers much better resistance to UV attack and weathering compared to traditional gloss. Therefore retaining its colour and gloss for longer.
Truguard Hi - Textured Masonry FinishI want to hide and disguise hairline cracks on my walls. These keep appearing even after I've filled them, what can I do?Truguard Hi - Textured Masonry Finish is ideal for this application. It will hide and disguise the cracks in the wall. The flexible nature of the coating will also prevent the cracks from re-appearing over a period of time.
Truguard Flexible Exterior Gloss SystemDo I need to use the undercoat on plastic rainwater goods that have not been painted? No, as long as they have weathered just apply the Gloss directly onto the surface. Make sure that the surfaces are clean and dry before painting.
Truguard Masonry FinishesI have got mould on my external walls, what do I do before painting?
Its always a good idea to check that the damp proof course is in tact and repair any cracks in the wall and leaks in rainwater goods. All areas supporting mould and fungal growths should be treated with Fungicidal Wash making sure the growths are treated for at least 24 hours. In many instances treating the surfaces twice is necessary.
Truguard Pliolite Based Masonry FinishI need to paint my external walls during the winter months what can I use?Pliolite is the ideal product it is shower proof after 20 minutes even in extremely cold temperatures well below 0. This allows for all year round exterior decoration.
Truguard Smooth Masonry FinishI need to paint car park walls and the clients specified an anti-carbonation coating can you help?Truguard Smooth Masonry paint has been tested and provides excellent anti-carbonation properties. Confirmation of this can be obtained from Leyland paints on request.
Truguard Masonry FinishesCan I paint Fletton Common Bricks? These types of bricks are usually very smooth, un-absorbent and dense. Gaining adhesion to them is difficult, therefore we would not recommend they are painted.
Truguard Flexible Exterior Gloss SystemI am painting the exterior front door of my customer's house. It is flaking really badly since the last time it was painted, what is the best remedy?Remove all the existing coatings right back to the bare wood and use the full Truguard Flexible Exterior Gloss System. This system offers great flexibility, colour retention and allows the wood to breathe due its micro porosity.
